Biodata Format for Job Application: The Appropriate Format
The biodata is an essential part of the jobseeker. Most of the time the company meets the biodata first before the candidate; thus the first impression often very well lies on the paper. With that in mind, a candidate intent on landing the job should pay attention in writing his/ her biodata.
Generally, the biodata format for job applications contains three primary sections: basic personal and contact information;
professional and educational qualifications; and other technical skills, and interests. However, there are actually several types of biodata formats available. The various types of biodata formats share the common goal of “selling” the jobseeker to a prospective company by playing up any of their professional skills, educational qualifications,
or major achievements. Some companies even require a particular format, but if that is
not specified then it is important to at least have an idea about these resume types. Knowing and correctly choosing the best suitable format for that job application will give the candidate the edge he/ she may need to land that coveted spot!
The Different Biodata Formats
Biodata may be classified according to experience or profession. In terms of experience,
a biodata format may either play up a candidate’s role in the previous company he/ she worked for. On the other hand, a fresh graduate’s biodata should profile achievements and organizational work he/
she may have participated in college. The following are the three basic types
• FUNCTIONAL – emphasizes the individual’s talents and achievements. The functional resume is typically designed for those who would like to change careers as it highlights key skills and experiences from past jobs or projects.
• CHRONOLOGICAL/ REVERSE CHRONOLOGICAL – the traditional format, normally details the individual’s past job experiences. There is no separate section for skills and accomplishment as
this may be included within the job experiences. Also includes a career objective. The chronological format gives a clearer picture about past job roles and contributions although it is difficult to highlight major skills and strengths.
• COMBINED – combines functional and chronological elements. Job skills may be less detailed as other sections such as “major skills” or “achievements” may repeat it.
Another biodata format for job application would be according to the
candidate’s profession. In general this includes:
• Entry level biodata – for the college graduate. Entry level biodata formats highlight educational qualification, on-the-job training, and roles and contributions of the individual to clubs or organizations he/ she belonged in. This is a commonly encountered format during job applications.
• Technical or Professional biodata – the technical job application biodata may contain keywords that concern fields like as IT or biotechnology. The professional biodata on the other hand, focuses on keywords on their respective fields, e.g. law, medicine.
